Lib Dems commitment to hybrid cars and the biofuel industry
The Liberal Democrats remain at the forefront of tackling climate change as they pursue they
ambition to achieve net zero and avert catastrophe from the existential threat of climate change.
Soaring temperatures leading to wildfires, floods, droughts and rising sea levels are affecting
millions of people directly, and billions more through falling food production and rising prices. The
Liberal Democrats are committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2045 at the
latest through utilising innovative clean technologies of the future and backing British businesses to
lead the charge.
Two significant ways that the Liberal Democrats are tackling this complex issue is through
investment in hybrid cars and clean public transport and advancing progress with biofuels.
Under their promise for a “fair deal for the environment”, the party have outlined measures to make
it cheaper and easier for drivers to switch to hybrid and fully electric vehicles. This would include
“restoring the requirement that every new car and small van sold from 2030 is zero-emission” as
the party warned of the Tories’ “chaotic” U-turn having seriously undermined electric vehicle
manufacturing. The Lib Dems would also reintroduce the Plug-in Car Grant, which was axed under
the Tories in June 2022 whilst rapidly deploying far more charging points and making them more
accessible. The manifesto says: “By investing in electric vehicles and clean public transport, as
well as encouraging walking and cycling, Liberal Democrats will enhance local, regional and
national connectivity while boosting the economy, protecting the environment and improving public
health.”
The Liberal Democrats are also setting their sights on transport decarbonisation through the use of
biofuels for aviation, marine and the UK vehicle market. Biofuels are renewable resources
designed to complement the use of fossil fuels with the hope of eventually replacing them. It is the
parties ambition that investment and tax relief on biofuels will allow for longer journeys outside the
city, rather than just being used for short local trips. Though the specific tax relief rates are yet to
be announced this support from the party will pave the way for further adoption of biofuels to the
domestic market.
